Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden and its export centre, mainly due to the harbour being the largest in Scandinavia. Almost 30 % of Swedish foreign trade passes through here, which attracts many export-driven companies.
There are 550,000 people in Gothenburg, 1 million in the region, increasing 1 % annually. There are two universities with total of 48,000 students.
There are over 750 different industries, i.e. 92 % of all the country´s sectors are represented in the Gothenburg region. It is the home city and a headquarter to major companies such as Volvo, SKF, Stena and R&D of Astra Zeneca. Gothenburg is a creative city, driven by education, R&D and IT as well as media and design, creating a lot of new companies.
In 2015 employment growth in the Gothenburg region was double the national average, both higher than Stockholm and Malmö. There is a powerful regional growth strategy and by the year 2035 the Gothenburg is expected to have 80,000 more jobs.
