FINWE – growth and internationalization at Technopolis premises

Finwe Ltd. has been a tenant at Technopolis premises in Oulu Linnanmaa campus since the company was founded in 2006. The company is a VTT spin-off and the choice of location was significantly affected by the proximity of VTT, and the level of service offered by Technopolis.

Finwe currently employs 11 people and operates internationally. Operations have been actively developed during 2013 and the aim is to accelerate the growth further, especially through exports over the next two years. CEO of Finwe, Juha Kela, says he is satisfied with the facilities and their location in the centre of Oulu’s technology hub. Most of the local clients can be found in the same campus.

Solutions for mobile applications

Finwe is a software company providing products and services for the development of mobile solutions. The specific area of expertise is the products and services related to the mobile interaction and sensor solutions. Company’s cutting edge product is a 360 VideoBall mobile application that can be downloaded for free from Google Play and iOS app store.  The application allows watching 360 panorama videos easily and simply by moving the device. “The smartphone or tablet acts as sort of a periscope for complete 360 video content,” says Juha Kela. On the basis of the developed video application, the company has signed partner and co-operation agreements with Intel and Kolor, to mention a few. Results of the development work will be presented for example in Las Vegas at CES 2014 and in Barcelona at MWC 2014 trade fairs at Intel and Kolor booths.

Collaboration from the events

CEO Juha Kela praises Technopolis also for organizing a variety of events. At MoneyTalks Forum event held in Tampere in June, Finwe got a chance to meet with representatives of Yle who were looking for partnerships with different technology providers. The meeting resulted in a cooperation agreement where Finwe’s 360 panorama video solution was piloted at the latest Yle Red Nose Day broadcasting. Follow-up actions are under negotiation and there is a good potential for broader cooperation, particularly in the development of webcasting techniques.

International partnerships

Finwe is also familiar with the internationalization services offered by Technopolis. These services are offered within the framework of Europe’s largest network providing internationalization services, the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN).  The services can help SMEs to find new technology and business partners abroad. For example, in February 2013 Finwe attended a business matchmaking event held at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade fair and found many potential business leads. Partners can also be sought within more than 50 countries covered by the network by setting up a company profile. Finwe company profile has already generated some interest and new contacts are now investigated further.
