New International Growth Business to Oulu

Two top-notch entrepreneurs, Jyrki Hallikainen and Tommi Uhari, are in the game with new ideas and hard targets. Their new company aims at building a new international business that will create hundreds of new jobs and sales of hundreds of millions over the next few years.

”After Technopolis helped us secure financing, we established Uros Oy, a company focusing on international mobile services, in Oulu. We have already started recruiting the first employees and best guess is that we will need up to 100 people in the first year of operations. There was a great team effort to take advantage of this opportunity and turn it rapidly into reality. Technopolis has played a key role in pulling together the many parties needed to launch this venture and coordinating the effort to pitch it and fund it. In addition, the City of Oulu, Tekes, the Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, and the Ministry of Employment and the Economy have all provided excellent support”, comment entrepreneurs Jyrki Hallikainen and Tommi Uhari, satisfied.

“There’s been a lot of talk and headlines about the threats to Finland and Oulu, in particular caused by restructuring in the mobile cluster, but not nearly enough has been said about the opportunities. This case is a textbook example of how change can create new opportunities for growth entrepreneurship. And I can promise you that Technopolis will do everything in its power to ensure that there are many more cases like this to come. We’ve only just begun!” says Keith Silverang, CEO of Technopolis.

“The Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment has with please recognized that there is strong will to build new, growth targeted business based on current knowledge.  Supporting growth companies are also in central role in our operation”, comments Leila Helaakoski, Director of the North Ostrobothnia Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. “Also the city of Oulu is willing to support by all means all new companies, who want to grow and prosper and generate new work opportunities to Oulu”, continues Matti Pennanen, the Mayor of Oulu and encourages also other entrepreneurs in Oulu to generate new companies and employ knowledgeable workers in ICT sector reconstruction.

“Tekes wants to support significant start-ups”, says Tekes Director Kari Tilli. His colleague at Ministry of Employment and Economy concurs. “We want to do all we can to facilitate new growth in Finland and find new careers for as many of the people affected by changes at Nokia and in its supply chain”, says Director Anssi Paasivirta from the Ministry.
